When I was a child, probably around 4 or 5 years of age, my mom gave me sewing cards. Do you remember these? They were cardboard pictures with holes in them and you would lace the thread through the holes. I googled "sewing cards" and they still make them. These cards were my first sewing experience.
Many years later, when I was in my late teens, the young teenager from across the street came over one day with material, thread and a chart and wanted me to help her get started on a project. I read the instructions on how to stitch and we learned together. The piece she was stitching was an old railroad station that use to be in our town. She was stitching it for her parents anniversary. It meant a lot to her because her dad was an engineer. After that I was hooked on stitching. Later, I taught my cousin Sharron how to stitch. I don't think she has put needle and thread down since. She has created many beautiful pieces for herself and her children.
From what I recall, it didn't take long for us to learn the basics of cross stitching, but I know for myself it has given me many hours of pleasure.

What a neat post! That brings back memories! Stitching cards were certainly popular back in the day, weren't they? I wonder if they are sitll around? I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
Hi, Teresa, Yes, when the girls go to the concert, they will take all the pictures they can, I know. They will fly, with their mom and dad, to Austin, see the concert, and fly back that night, I think. Don't you know this will be a Christmas gift they will remember forever and ever!!?!!
hugs, bj
I bought some stitching cards last year for my two kids, we take them to church with us actually LOL! It helps them to sit quietly but still have fun :) My friend taught me how to stitch, she started me on a small Christmas design and I have been hooked ever since. I did put it away for about a year and a half when my kids were both babies, I just couldn’t do it at that time, now I am making up for lost time LOL!
I had those sewing cards too! I had forgotten all about them!
Hi Teresa,
I can't remember making stitching cards myself, but my daughter Sofia loved it in nursey school! I kept a few of them as a memory. When I was in primary school we had to make a kind of sampler with different stitches. That was all. After a period of 'nothing' my uncle gave me a present for my birthday (I was 12 I think): a bellpull in crossstittches. As I love(d) my uncle very much, I gave it a go. With no crossstitcher around in the family, I had to find out myself how to do this. But I succeeded. When I see my Dutch national costumes bellpull now, I see many irregularities, but I'm still proud I managed to do it. And as a result ... I was hooked ever since!
I learned Sofia and Fleur to stitch, they like it. Valérie is not interested at all, which is perfectly o.k. with me!
Greetings, Carolien
I have not learned cross stitching, but Heidi taught my husband. It started as a joke and he took off with it. Some of his work is on my blog.
